Findlay•Hancock County Chamber of Commerce and the Agency on Aging Present Senior Leadership Program
Hancock Senior Leadership is a community awareness program designed to develop informed, motivated and committed retired and semi-retired persons to assume leadership roles within the Hancock County community. It is co-sponsored by the Hancock County Agency on Aging and the Findlay/Hancock County Chamber of Commerce.
Maile Doyle, HSL Facilitator, explains that this program was adapted from several successful programs in North Carolina and was modeled after the Hancock Youth Leadership program. Hancock Senior Leadership class will meet weekly for nine weeks, each Tuesday from
9:00 AM to 3:30 PM beginning September 13, 2011 through November 8, 2011.
“I am passionate about this program and excited to be a part of it because there are so many retired and semi-retired people in our community who are still energetic and enthusiastic about being an active part of Hancock County,” explains Doyle.
Topics include:
- Orientation and History of Hancock County
- Energizing the Area Economy
- New Challenges & Directions in Public Education
- Social Services
- Justice & Safety
- Arts & Recreation
- Local Government: Citizen Synergy
- Health Care
This program introduces the participants to the various community systems and explains what roles volunteers play in their organizations. Then the retirees have the information they need to know how they can make a difference in Hancock County with the skills and talents they have spent many years growing. It also affords them the opportunity to make friends with like-minded community members. The facilitator provides activities and many opportunities for interaction so the participants can become friends.
Larry Slaughterbeck, 2009 HSL graduate explains that’s exactly what happened. “Our class still meets for dinner once a month. We became friends and have helped with Coats for Christmas and a baseball tournament.”
This leadership program is a rewarding experience that gives retirees a sense of accomplishment explains Slaughterbeck. “We kept our minds and bodies engaged … Even though I worked in Findlay 40 years this program gave me the opportunity to meet lots of new people. It was great to be with my peers. I am very proud of our generation.”
The cost for this nine week program is $200/individual, $300/couple (includes buddies, friends, spouse, co-workers, etc.) which covers all materials, refreshments and administration. Registrations forms are available at the Findlay/Hancock County Chamber of Commerce, the Hancock County Agency on Aging and the Findlay/Hancock County Library or online at www.findlayhancockalliance.com or www.hancockseniors.org.
